To portray the burdens of a working single mom, I designed a performance in which I clean the gallery while preparing peanut butter and jelly bagged lunches for my audience. In return for my work, I asked that each member place a plaster brick into the laundry bag I carried with me. I carried the laundry bag over my shoulder throughout the entire performance while vacuuming, dusting, and preparing the sandwiches. The participants formed a single line in the center of the room behind the pile of bricks. Surrounding them were six pedestals that held the cleaning supplies and lunch ingredients. After placing a brick into my laundry bag, the participants waited in line for their food to be made. The weight in my laundry bag increased, making it more difficult for me to complete my task.
